Everything influences my art: daily life, beauty, nature, feelings; so many artists, so much inspiration.

Painting, for me, is a life-long journey of discovery. It does not have to have a reason or a plan, it just is.

It is more than pictures; it is an expression of feelings and emotions in response to any subject. I am my art; my art is me.

I hope that my works will engage the viewers in some way and make them want to linger and explore the painting further. Whether journeying through a landscape, feeling a mood, unravelling a mystery, or delighting in the beauty of a flower; I would like it to be an enjoyable experience that takes them off into their own imaginings.

There are so many options and so many mediums and techniques; that I would not like to restrict myself to any particular area or style, but I always enjoy the wonderful effects of colour. At present, my favourite medium is oil painted over acrylic.

Rob has been creating art for over 20 years.

He received his Bachelor of visual arts at Southern Cross University, Lismore and, has just recently completed his Diploma of Graphic Design at Nambour TAFE.

He has shown in group exhibitions at the Noosa Regional Gallery and has been selling privately on and off for the last 15 years in Australia and New Zealand.

Rob is inspired by the environment around him… the local surroundings, the birds, insects and people all entwine with the unseen forces and a deep unconscious flow. These elements infiltrate his work and create a constant shift of style and mediums.

The life of an artist is never an easy one. It is a courageous decision to turn your back on everything you are told will create a successful human, to venture down a path not so well travelled and cut ones dependence on society. Drawing attention to the subjects of the times and essentially recording life on earth, creative people are our scribes. Without the contribution of the artists and artisans throughout the history of the world we would never have arrived at this point, where finally, creativity is receiving the attention it deserves.

When Tony Pates realized he was an artist society was not as ready to acknowledge his role. A post war child, Tony was born directly into a damaged time full of people preoccupied by the nightmares they had endured and struggling to rebuild their worlds. After being awarded one of only 2 scholarships to Art College, at 14 Tony was forced to turn down the opportunity and instead entered the coalmines in England to help support 9 brothers and sisters. For the next 25 years while in the mines Tony never denied his true self, persevering with art throughout his life. In 1981 Tony reinvented himself and moved to Australia, settling first in Sydney then finally arriving on the Sunshine Coast in1988.

A self-taught artist, Tony encapsulates his subject’s perfectly in every piece. While his passion is undoubtedly portraiture; Tony’s collection of landscapes is no less impressive.

My work explores life from a slightly different angle, using symbol and metaphor for the spiritual aspects and stories of our lives, using everyday objects. I have a particular interest in the personal stories behind our daily ritual use of cups & teapots that connect  both past and present.

I am currently exploring the themes of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ through a series entitled ’The Looking Glass,’ which explore both imagery and dreamscapes around growing up in the midst of a bewildering ‘wonderland’.

I have been honoured with several 1st prizes in various Art Competitions for both Still Life and Portraiture and share my skills with others through tutoring on the Sunshine Coast. I also welcome invitations to tutor for other art groups, teaching all mediums and levels and draw much satisfaction from empowering others in their own unique style and giftedness.

I have published a book entitled ‘Touch by Adoption –Journeys Toward Wholeness’ and have also developed a series of fabric items featuring my artwork that are currently for sale on my website.

I am currently represented at the galleries listed below along with a list of my memberships and am also represented in the Australian Catholic University Collection held in Canberra, Caboolture Mental Health Facility and various personal collections both in Australia and overseas.
